Grass: How to look after a lawn
Should I use a lawn fertiliser?
Applying a lawn fertiliser will produce thicker, healthier and greener grass, which will therefore help reduce the development of moss and weeds. The best time to apply lawn fertilisers is late spring but if you walk on the grass a lot you should probably feed the lawn every six weeks until July or August.
How do I look after a lawn during dry weather and summer?
It is important not to mow too often during dry periods so let the grass grow longer than normal. Don't think that just because your lawn has turned brown that it is dead, it will become green again when the weather changes and rain comes. However, don't be tempted to water your lawn during the dry spells as this teases the grass into rooting closer to the surface, reducing its strength and durability.
When is the best time to mow a lawn?
Grass will grow best if you mow it regularly (except during exceptionally dry periods). Aim to mow your lawn about once a week during summer, which will create a much thicker lawn and will help to stop the growth of weeds.
How do I stop moss growing on my lawn?
Moss often grows in lawns if the grass is too short, or if the area is constantly shady or often wet. Visit your local garden centre for a moss killing product. Once the moss is dead you will be able to rack it out and sow new grass seed.
