Grass: How to create a new lawn
Creating a new lawn
If you are planning on creating a new lawn the time of year will determine your options.
Grass will grow best in spring so sow the grass seeds around March or April. Grass needs moisture and warmth to grow well so keep an eye on the weather. The lawn will take a number of weeks to establish itself, but it should be thick enough in time for summer. Grass seeds cost around £10 for a 30 square metre lawn.
The alternative to sowing your own lawn is to buy and lay turf. Buying turf is much more expensive but produces much quicker results - ideal for other times of the year or before selling the house.
Preparing the lawn for sowing
Be sure to remove any weeds (roots and all!) as well as any debris such as twigs, leaves and stones.
Dig the ground to break up the soil to a depth of 20cm, then fertilise and level the ground reading for sowing the grass. Grass grows best on a firm ground so flatten the ground with a roller or by foot.
